But sometimes, a past is not real, is invented as a means of escape for a culture or a lover or an ending to a film. To be on the other end of the story is a feeling hard to describe.

from a status update,
Tennessee 7:46pm- What is the catalyst that wrote hate in Southern US history: slavery, segregation? To believe the center is a divide between 1 race & another misses the reality. Although this division was real &, whether we want to believe, remains real, the catalyst is not race. The south grew as a closed society, remote. It was, & remains, a society that lashes out much it sees as being beyond tradition.

{ Bessie Smith, Empress of the Blues, Chattanooga, Tennessee }

“At the time of Bessie Smith’s birth in Chattanooga, Tennesee, blacks were so little thought of that no record was made; only the date she gave on her marriage license leads us to give the year as 1894.

The Empress of the Blues… singing the blues in the 1920’s & 30’s. The road that took her to that title was not an easy one, no romantic rags to riches story such as Horatio Alger made popular in her youth for white boys. For a young black woman from the South a far different approach was needed…

This was a woman who fought for what she believed in, for what and whoever was hers, and backed down before nobody. She had determination which at times became a fiery temper and no one was exempt from her wrath, which could turn violent; at six feet in height and above 200 pounds in weight, that wrath could be devastating. Yet the same experiences and temperament could show as great loyalty to those around her. The whole range, with all its passion, were expressed in her songs and the way she sang them.”

But I will never ask, “Who are you?”
See, have I ever asked?
This is a line I won’t cross. I won’t stand in front of you
and demand (blank).

I don’t know what this is: society-society. Not entertainment. Maybe not even comprehensible. I could be clever and constrain my days to a specific topic, like a talk show host. Instead I constrain the associations. I imitate you, the ways we are on Facebook. If I’m snow, drifting, then I’m ice and snow, fragments instead of uninterrupted powder.
